SCOTUS JANUS OPINION EXPECTED, BUT TO WHAT IMPACT?
The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule very soon on the Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 case, which arises out of Illinois. The case challenges the public sector union requirement to pay fees to a union even if an employee is not a member of the union. The fees are designed to cover the benefits the union provides for the non-union employee. Janus, a child support employee working for the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services, is challenging the requirement that he pay a fee to AFSCME Local 2600 as a violation of his free speech rights. An overview of the case and its expected fall out from the Chicago Sun-Times is attached: https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/public-sector-unions-supreme-court-decision-illinois-mark-janus-case-rauner/.
