EMPLOYERS BALANCE TECH ACCESSIBILITY WITH CAUTION
Employees who work with minors and vulnerable populations have greater than ever access to those they serve, which greatly enhances service but also opens liability if the communication methods are abused. Employers must also be careful to manage policy changes without violating employees’ free speech and union organizing communications. Chicago Public Schools banned their teachers from using their personal cell phone numbers or social media channels to communicate to students this school year. Critics believe the policy may be a step too far. Implementing a strong but legal communications policy is important for employers, an area of focus for HM.
